We will support, and where possible, assess the horse at the sale if you do decide to buy directly BUT we do recommend acquiring a horse from a rescue, like us or another reputable rescue, 1st! We will help you do that too!
But if you are convinced you want to purchase directly from the sales then let us help you!
We want you to go in with your eyes open and understand our sale ethics when bidding for you:
*Please remember that with our best intentions we cannot guarantee the horse will be suitable for you and meet all your needs. We will have experts on the ground and do everything possible to ensure you are buying the most suitable horse but we will not take any responsibility if it is deemed ill or is unsuitable for any reason.
But if you are convinced you want to purchase directly from the sales then let us help you!
We want you to go in with your eyes open and understand our sale ethics when bidding for you:
- We do not believe in bidding against public people but will if we are bidding on behalf of a private person, we usually only bid against kill buyers (see below*)
- We will not pay thousands for a horse - there are so many horses going through the sales each week that another suitable one will come up - sometimes we just need patience
- We will have the horse assessed where possible
- We can arrange transport for you
*Please remember that with our best intentions we cannot guarantee the horse will be suitable for you and meet all your needs. We will have experts on the ground and do everything possible to ensure you are buying the most suitable horse but we will not take any responsibility if it is deemed ill or is unsuitable for any reason.
What happens at the Horse Auctions (sales)?
Well, you won't want to know but we are going to tell you anyway, as it is the truth!
A horse owner may need to sell or 'get rid of' their horse/s for many reasons:
Their child has lost interest, they have lost their job and cannot feed their horse, their is a drought, they have to downsize, they've outgrown their horse, the horse has got old, the horse has become lame, has been a broodmare and now no use, isn't fast enough, isn't tall enough, is wrong colour. And the list goes on! There are so many reasons a person, business, stable, breeder or trainer may need to get rid their horse/s and depending on who you are the sales is a really easy option.
It takes time to photograph and list a horse for sale and then have people come and look at him to discover he is not suited so the easiest way to sell a horse is to take them to the sales. That way they are guaranteed of a sale! Easy! But what you may not have control of is who buys your horse!
If you are lucky your horse will go to a great home, possibly until one of the above reasons may come into play again, or a dealer will buy him and resell him. But for those that are not so lucky, they may end up on a truck heading for a meat processing plant.
If your horse is luckier than the not so lucky ones, he may be offered for sale on Facebook for 100 or 200% profit on what that kill buyer actually paid for him the day before! But few of these make it to the Facebook Second Chance sales pages. Sometimes the pregnant mares, mares with foal, foals, pretty horses and some others the kill buyers know will sell for a good profit.
And besides, there is really good money in horse meat export!
So, should you have a horse from death row? The answer is NO, definitely NOT! This is such a debatable topic for some rescue organisations and for some people but we believe NO! The reason being is if you didn't buy the horse at the sale for $20, $50, $100, $200 or other, why would you then pay $800, $1200 or other to then save the horse and give the kill buyer all that profit to go to the next sale and buy more horses with all the money you gave him to do so? It's a no brainer! Buy from rescues so they can bid against the kill buyers at the sales and put the kill buyers out of a job! Simple!
*NB In saying all this we do not hold the kill buyers accountable for the death of any horse. They have just as much right to buy a horse from a sale as any one of us have. It is their job to buy and sell horses as they see fit and that is how they make a living!
They did not put their beloved horse in a sale, others did! Don't be one of them!
